| Lisa Bernstein is the Executive Director and co-founder of The What To Expect Foundation.
Bernstein was the former Associate Publisher of "Brain Quest", the 20 million-copy, curriculum based, educational bestseller from Workman Publishing. She was also the Marketing Director of The New Press and the Fund For Independent Publishing. Founded by Andre Schriffrin, The New Press is one of the nation's leading non-profit publishers with a mission to popularize intellectual theories in education, literature, politics and cultural studies. Bernstein has worked in the publicity, marketing, and editorial departments of four major book publishers including Bantam Books, Henry Holt and Co., and Little, Brown and Co. She has created campaigns for a variety of best-selling authors including Thomas Pynchon, Studs Terkel, Amos Elon and Sue Grafton. As a Creative Director at Workman Publishing from 1991-1995, she worked with Murkoff and Eisenberg, to market their What To Expect series to parents and professionals. For 10 years Lisa had worked as a volunteer literacy tutor at programs across the country. In 1992, she created and staffed a literacy program for the Odyssey House's teen, in-patient drug rehabilitation center in New York. At the same time she was receiving hundreds of calls from clinics, prisons and high schools across the country asking for free copies of the What To Expect books. In 1999 she left Workman Publishing to found the What To Expect Foundation with Heidi Murkoff to provide culturally and literacy level appropriate educational materials for low-income families. A native of Philadelphia, she holds a BA from Carnegie-Mellon University. Lisa lives in New York City with her husband and two children. She serves on a variety of boards and committees including those of The Parent's League of New York City, and The National Birthing Project. |
